Hail Damage: How to Protect Your Roof and Make a Claim

Hailstorms can wreak havoc on your roof, leading to costly repairs or total replacements. To minimize damage and navigate the insurance claim process smoothly, taking proactive measures before and after a storm is essential. Here’s how to protect your roof and file hail damage insurance claims successfully.

Protecting Your Roof from Hail Damage

  1. Install Impact-Resistant Shingles: Consider upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, specifically designed to withstand hail impacts and reduce damage.
  2. Regular Inspections: Schedule regular roof inspections, especially after severe weather. Early detection of damage can prevent further issues and keep repair costs down.
  3. Maintain Your Roof: Clean gutters, trim overhanging branches and fix loose or damaged shingles. Proper maintenance reduces the chances of hail causing extensive damage.

Filing a Hail Damage Insurance Claim: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Document the Damage: Take clear photos of the damage from different angles after a storm. Include pictures of dented gutters, broken shingles, and other hail impact signs.
  2. Contact Your Insurance Company: Report the damage as soon as possible
  3. Delays can affect your claim. Provide the insurer with all the documentation you’ve gathered.
  4. Get a Professional Roof Inspection: Hire a licensed roofing contractor to assess the damage. A detailed inspection report can support your claim and provide a professional evaluation of repair costs.
  5. Meet the Insurance Adjuster: When the insurance adjuster arrives, ensure your contractor is present to discuss the findings. This can help ensure that all damage is recognized and fairly assessed.
  6. Review the Settlement Offer: Carefully review the insurance company’s offer. If the compensation seems inadequate, negotiate or seek a second opinion.
